The global crisis of excessive production, use and discarding of plastic is turning our landscapes, oceans, lakes and rivers into plastic wastelands and threatening health and biodiversity. How do we make new international law to address this challenge?
The International Law Association of Canada is organizing a virtual panel on Plastic Pollution and International Law to coincide with the Ottawa meeting of the UNEP Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC-4). The panel will explore international environmental law developments relevant to drafting a new international agreement on plastic pollution.
International law experts will discuss what lessons can we learn from other international environmental agreements and apply to the context of plastic pollution, e.g., in terms of shared commitments, holistic and inclusive approaches, enhanced responsibility for lifecycle of materials and products, international trade dimensions, subsidies, equity considerations, human rights impacts, funding, technology transfer, public education and engagement, transition planning, control measures, prohibitions, reporting, enforcement, etc.
With Irina Buga (De Brauw Blackstone); Helionor de Anzizu (CIEL); Oonagh Fitzgerald (HRREC); Melissa Gorrie (Ecojustice); Alexandra Harrington (CISDL), Sabaa Khann (DSF); Sara Seck (Dalhousie U); Jon Solorzano (Vinson & Elkins).
